Current and Past Interventions

Afghanistan was already one of the poorest countries in the world before the Taliban takeover. Where the economy was deteriorated and further worsened by the coronavirus pandemic and a punishing drought since late 2020. When the Taliban came to power on 15 August, the main artery keeping Afghanistan’s economy alive was the  donor fund which has been freezed by donors . With the Taliban government unable to pay salaries, hundreds of thousands of state employees found themselves with no livelihoods. The is on the brink of economic collapse, with the local currency at an all-time low and food price on the rise, and faces a severe, multi-faceted, and interlocking humanitarian, economic, and political crises, which had unfolding implications on basic services. Job losses, lack of cash and soaring prices are creating a new class of hungry in AfghanistanBRD is active and has full presence  in AfghanistanThrough our program, we are working to create livelihood opportunities and reduce poverty, especially among the most vulnerable groups. BRD developed programmes and approaches that link people to jobs in demand in the national market and develop skills through market-oriented vocational training, improve agriculture productivity by training formers on new forming and irrigation methods, watershed management, and income generation project for women, youth and vulnerable population to improve livelihood at household level and increase their resilience toward economic shocks. As a right based organisation, BRD enhance the ownership of its target as active right holders. We build capacity of the community organisation, to strengthen the existing delivery mechanism, and avoiding the creation of parallel structures. These are the key elements of sustainability of our programs. Since most Afghans depend on the land for an income, our work on livelihoods is closely linked with our efforts to protect the environment and adaptation of climate change.
